Perspective of Jem


School is unfortunately starting again and the trial seems to be finally passing over. Scout and I were playing out side as usual when she spotted an 'olley polly and she was about to be crushin it with her foot when I told her to stop. I told her that why would hurt some that doesn't do any harm. Ever since Tom Robinson was killed and convicted I have been thinking about what Atticus had once told me. He said "You can shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit em'. But it's a sin to kill a mocking bird." I have have referred to the mocking bird as Tom because he never hurt anyone. He never intended to cause inconvenience to anybody, but he was killed brutally. Keeping Scout from killing the bug was a sign that I am starting to mature.

One of the things that has really gotten me mad was when Scout came home asking me why her teacher was telling her about how Hitler didn't treat Jews equally. I got really mad because her teacher was the one who was telling the whole town that Tom was guilty and because he was black he didn't deserve to live. I got so mad at Scout for bringing up the case again so I vented at her and I felt bad afterwords.


Why do you think Ewell was following Mrs. Robinson?

Choice C: So far, is this a novel about race? Class? Gender? Coming of Age? Place? Select and defend your answer.

This novel is mainly about race because of the trial of Tom Robinson and the time period that it is in. At this point in time white and black people were not treated equally. White's acted like they were superior over blacks. Anyone that hung out with blacks was not liked in the town. For an example, Dolphus Raymond has mixed kids and all of his friends are Negroes. Every white person treats him like he is crazy. I think that Harper Lee was trying to convince people that readers that everyone is created and should be treated equally. She did this by putting it in the perspective of Scout. She doesn't favor whites over blacks and her father, Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. He obviously gives respect to Negroes and is trying to convince the white jury that they shouldn't prejudice against blacks.

I also think that this story is about gender because you are reading in the perspective of Scout. She is a young girl who is growing older and is pressured to act more feminine. She has grown up along her brother Jem's side. She didn't have a mother so she is very confused when people like aunt Alexandra are telling her how to dress when she is comfortable with her self.

How do you think the story (what you read so far) would have changed if Scout and Jem had a mother present in their lives? Would it change for the better or for the worse? Explain your thoughts.

I think that if Jem and Scout had a mom they would very different characters. It would defiantly change the story and mental attitude of the family. It wouldn't change the outcome of the people in the town such as the Ewell's being so dirty and mean. I think that if the mother existed it would the story less interesting. I don't think that they would have known because she is basically taking the role of a mother.

I think the character that it affects most is Atticus because he seems very lonely and he has a lot more on his hands being a single parent. He has no one that he can talk to and express him self to. He has to take care of Jem and Scout by him self. It seems like he would doing more of what he likes to do instead of feeling the stress of taking care of kids by himself. Atticus seems very dull and I think he would be a lot more joyful if he still had a wife that he loved.

It would change Jem and Scout in many ways. First there is Jem. Jem has a lot more responsibilities because he watches over Scout when Atticus is not there. If the mom existed then Scout would cling to her mom a lot more. Since she doesn't Jem and Scout got to a lot more as brother and sister. They are a lot closer then they would be if the mother was present. Scout would also be a lot more feminine if a female was around. She wouldn't dress the way she does and she wouldn't have the attitude that she does. It would change the story dramatically if mom was alive and I don't think the book would be as interesting.

Chapters 13-15

Perspective of Dill

This week has been a roller coaster. I ran away from my house by my self a went 300 miles from Meridian to Maycomb. I had a couple of reasons to leave. They weren't very pensive people. I didn't get enough attention from my parents. They bought me whatever I wanted but just so I had some thing to do. They would buy me a book to read just so that I wouldn't bother them. They always wanted me to be playing out side and doing something. They would antagonize for not going to play outside like a boy is supposed to do. I was told that they loved me I it felt like they didn't mean it.

I acquired about thirteen dollars from my Ma's purse and bought a ticket to Maycomb be the Finch's was the only place that I felt safe. When I arrived I was exhausted. I hadn't taken a bath in days and I could hardly remember the last time I ate. I climbed through Scout's window and waited under her bed and it was torture to hear them eat dinner. When she came into her room she stepped on my hand and It hurt real bad. The next thing I know Jem is hitting me in the head with a broom. I emerged from the be and he stopped hitting me and they both gasped when they saw me. They were so surprised and they got me some food and I told them about my journey hear and I begged them not to tell my parents. I really did not want to go back the my moms house.

They gave me a place to stay and the next day we were back to normal, playing around in the tree house and thinking of plans to extract boo radley out of his house. I really like Scout and Jem and I would do anything to stay with them instead of my parents.

chapters 10-12

Perspective of Atticus

I did something that I don't feel proud of doing. I killed the rabid dog, Tim Robinson. I was told to by the sheriff because I have the "best shot" in town. He tossed the gun to me and I nervously loaded and and walked toward the dog that was slowly moving in the mist toward the Radley place. I knew that he was dangerous and was not at peace. I walked through the fog and aimed at the dog and shot. With that one shot it died and i had a had shown my skill with the gun that I wasn't proud of. He was the old dog that had lived in the neighborhood for over 10 years. If I didn't put him down the town would be in peril if he bit someone. I don't like watching animals die and I especially don't like killing animals. I walked home inaudibly and Scout and Jem were in shock and didn't say anything the rest of the night.

On my way home from work I realized that Miss. Dubouse's flowers had been torn up and and my first guess was Jem because he had been contradicting with her about lots of things. I came home and asked him what he did and he truthfully admitted to it. I ordered him to apologize because I thought it was a cantankerous thing to do. He went to apologize and i felt like that was the right thing for him to do. If he got punished then he deserved it. It turns out that I have to be gone gone for business for about a week. I have been trying to keep this case inconspicuous to the kids because it isn't a case they should be knowing about. I am a little worried that I will be gone too long but I know that Calpurnia will take good care of the kids.

perspective of Scout

When I woke up and heard that Jem say that it was snowing I jumped out of bed with excitement. I was fanatical because I have ever seen or been in snow. It hadn't even been this cold until 1884. We went out side and Jem thought that we should make a snowman. When we went to go gather some snow the ingenious Mr. Avery thought that it was our fault for the snow. Our bad behavior caused the bad weather and I thought that was wacko. We made a snowman and after we made Jem and I realized that it looked just like Mr. Avery. It had a fat stomach and Jem and I loved it. But we decided to change it so Mr. Avery wouldn't have a heart attack.

That night was incredibly scary. Atticus woke me up in the middle of the night and I looked at with a perplexed expression and asked what was going on. He told that miss Maudie has was burning down and suddenly was a awake and alert because I love Miss. Maudie. I was also worried because her house was adjacent to ours. We went outside and it was freezing cold so Jem and I tried to stay together as the fire burned through the inside of the house. I felt isolated just watching everyone but out the fire and i was alone in the street watching it. When the fire was put out we walked back inside and realized that we had a brown wool blanket on our shoulders. I didn't even know how it got there. Atticus didn't believe us but I think its Boo Radley.

At school everyone is calling my Daddy a "nigger-lover" just because he is defending Tom Robinson in a case that I don't know about. That made me so mad that I thought about punching the kids right the the face but then I remembered that Atticus wants me avoid hurting people. I listened to Atticus and just walked away from the kids that made fun of him. I just really want to know what the case is about.

Chapters 4-7

Perspective of Jem

I am so glad that school is finally over and I get to play all summer. Dill came back and I really enjoyed that because he is my friend and I have some one to hang out with. He is really hooked on to that Radley place. The three of us were playing a game where we rolled in a tire and when it was scouts turn she was rolled right to that front porch of the Radley house. That really scared me. After that we started a game where we imitated everyone in the Radley family. I thought it was pretty funny. Atticus got frustrated and thought that we were playing games to annoy Boo Radley and he asked what we were doing and I denied it.

I felt like Dill and I were becoming closer friends and I could tell that scout was feeling left out of our friendship. I felt bad but he is my age. So Scout just wandered from us started hangin out with the neighbor Miss. Maudie. Me and Dill tried puttin' a note in his when asking him if he wanted to get ice cream but Atticus caught us and told us to stop tormenting the old man. I guess he was right. I am just so curious and I dint understand why he doesn't come out of his house.

We listened to Atticus until it was Dill's last day in Maycomb. The stupidest decision I have ever made was to sneak in towards the Radley house and look in the window. It was Dill's and my idea and we brought scout to come along. We I peaked thought the window shutters at it was a dork house hen I saw the shadow of an man with a straw hat and this scared me to death. i instantly started to run and with Dill and Scout right behind be I heard a shotgun go off and it rattled the neighborhood. Going under the fence, my pants got caught so I just left them there and kept running. That was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me.

Chapter 1-3

Perspective of Scout

My name is Scout Finch and I live in a town called Macomb where everyone is very indigenous. I had a lot of fun this summer and I was looking forward to going back to school but now I regret it. I got to have fun with my brother Jem and we met someone named Dale. Hes about Jem's age and he is living with his aunt for the summer. When we first met him he bragged about how he could read but I can read and I am half his age. But I liked Dill. We played a lot over the summer and it was fun to spend time with someone besides Jem.

My first day of school wasn't very exciting. I think that I really irked my teacher, Miss. Caroline. I am in first grade and I could read and write at an advanced level. Miss. Caroline thought that Atticus was teaching me and she told me to tell him to stop so she could bring back down to the first grade level. I thought that she was being malevolent to my education to try to make me stupid. So on the first day of school I hadn't made the best impression on my teacher.

The next day was worse. Miss. Caroline was walking past us checking our lunches and when she noticed that Walter Cunningham didn't have a lunch she tried to give him a quarter to buy lunch in the town. He didn't accept it and she didn't know that Walter was the poorest kid in the class and he would never be able to pay her back. I was the one who had to tell her that and that irritated her. She whipped my hands 12 times and told me to sit in the corner of the room. Everyone laughed at me and I felt terrible. So far school hasn't been great but I am hoping that it gets better.

The soldier turned to go back to his camp and thats when one of the men stuck a knife in his back. Just put his knife right there.

Significance: This quote takes place when Deng is telling his story to Achak. His terrible and painful story has so many violent events like this. He is traveling with two Dinka men when they encounter a Sudanese Soldier. He stops them and starts to ask them questions. He tells them to wait while he goes to get more men. While he turns he is stabbed in the back by one of the men. I bet the men knew that they were going to die from the soldiers so they thought the best chance was to kill the man and run. This shows what people did to survive.
Personal Connection: I cant imagine the effect that would have on me if I saw a man get stabbed in the back and die. I have been in a situation before where I am watching some pick on or beat up some one else. I didn't think that it was right but these men had no choice. '

If you were Deng, would you be afraid to be with the men after they have killed someone?

I shat at that moment and I still can't understand why they didn't smell me!

This quote again comes from Deng when he telling Achak how he survived. Deng ran back to his village thinking that it would be okay but it had been overtaken by the Sudanese army. He ran into the school for shelter. He hides in the locker and when a soldier opens the locker he poops and pees himself. This shows how scared he was. But it was a good thing that he did this because every time a soldier opened the door it smelled so bad that they thought an animal had died in there. He was in there for two day in a cramped space without any food or water.
I couldn't imagine how hard that would be, being in a small place with no food or water for two days. I have been scared. But I have never been scared enough to poop and pee my pants. That would be unthinkable.

The man was in his horse. He yelled at Joesph, "Don't run! Don't run or I will shot!" So Joseph stopped there and turned to the man on the horse. And that's when he shot him. Right there.
pg 85, paragraph 2

This quote comes from William K when he is describing to his brothers death to Achak. He obviously didn't feel that connected to his brother because he thought that it was cool to describe is death to Achak. This quote shows how dangerous it is in Mariel Ba. Random raiders come into town on horses and shoot anyone that doesn't give them what they want. It is also showing how much of a savage place Sudan is. Innocent people dying just for someones pleasure.
I have such a strong connection with my brother so if something like this happened I would be petrified. If I saw him die I would be so depressed and would definitely couldn't be able to describe to someone else on how he died. That is such a serious thing but it happens everyday so the people of Mariel Ba aren't that resentful.

Her bucket was empty. The well had been contaminated. Dead goats and one half charred man had been thrown into it.

This quote takes place when Achak come back to his village with his father after he has left Aweil. Before he left his town was in good shape and it was running smoothly. When he come back about half of the people are dead and all of the men left to join the army. That shows how much the war has affected his town. It is tearing the country apart. No one in the village can brink any water because it has been contaminated by dead goats and people. That's how hard it is for these people to live.
I wouldn't be able to live in a town where if you leave for a week or two you come back and your you house has been destroyed and your friends have died. I wouldn't be able to tolerate living in a place like that when it happens on a daily basis. It seem like Achak is so used to it it doesn't bother him that much.

"You do not understand, I would tell them. You would not add to my suffering if you knew what I have seen."

This quote takes place when Valentino is tied up and wounded on the floor. He is describing how he first felt when he came to the country. He has suffered so many hardships and the Americans that he lives around treat him like dirt because he is from Africa. After he is bumped, pushed, or treated poorly this is what he wants to say to them. He silently tell them his story on how he endured the painful journey to America. This shows how Americans treated him and probably many other immigrants. They act like they are so much better than them.
I would despise living in a country where you feel so left out because you don't know how to speak English. A place where just because you look different, people treat you like you are different. I would feel lonely not having any friend's and nobody for me to talk to.

Would you have acted any differently if you were Valentino while he was getting robbed? Would you stand up for yourself?

"The animal broke across the path once more, leaping, it caught Angelo quickly. In a few moment the lion carried the second boy in its mouth, his teeth settled into Angelo's neck and clavicle."

This quote has huge significance to the story because it gives you another image Valentino has seen. He will never forget that and it probably changed him as a person. The lost boys were walking through the wilderness at nigh time and every boy was already terrified, but then a lion comes. To watch two of his friends get eaten my an animal must have been torture for him.
I would never mentally survive from that. It would take a lot of time to get that image out of my head. A friend of mine being eaten alive and then thinking that it could happen to me next. I would probably react the same way as Angelo and I would run.

QUESTION 1: I wonder why the author…

RESPONSE 1: I wonder why the author chose to use genetically modified crops as the plot in the story. It was an interesting idea and it was not what I expected. The villain, Desmond McCain made genetically modified wheat crops that would release toxic poisons into the air which would kill millions of people in Kenya. The author would have to do a lot o research to learn about genetically modified crops to write a story about them. The only reason that it surprised me was because in all the rest of the book the reason people die are from earthquakes and bombs. It is normally more violent of a plot.

I also wonder why after every one of Alex's missions he says he never wants to work for MI-6 or do any spy related jobs, he ends up doing it again. I guess that he was just born to be a spy and he cant stay a way from it. I just think that the author should stop saying that he doesn't want to be a spy anymore and he should just commit to being a spy.

QUESTION 2: If you could change one thing in the book, what would it be? Why would you change it?

RESPONSE 2: If I could change any thing about this book I would change the ending to make it sound like there would be a future to Alex Riders spy career. Now that he has turned 15 he should do some more advanced missions. The author ended it without a twist like he normally does. Is he going to follow in his fathers footsteps or is he going to forget about being a spy and go on to live normal life. That would be what I would want to have changed.

Another thing that I would have like to change, is giving Alex a partner. Someone he can trust. He is always working on his own and I bet it would be a lot easier if he had a partner he could work with. If he got captured there would be someone there to save him. This would open up ides to another book. He could have a sidekick that would help him through all of his missions. That would be the only other thing that I would change.

QUESTION 1:Do you think you would read another book by this author? Why or why not?

RESPONSE 1: I think I would definitely read another book by this author because his writing is so suspenseful and makes you want to keep reading until the last page. In every one of his Alex Rider books it has been so hard to put the book down so I read until I am about to fall asleep. He has written another series which I am guessing is a suspenseful thriller so I bet I wouldn't be disappointed reading it.
The reason why his writing is so captivating is because he adds violence, such as fist fights and shoot outs. Most of the time it revolves around a murder. I am a person who enjoys to read those types of book because I love the action and suspense it gives you. You start to root for the main character who is trying to escape from all the villains he encounters. So, yes I would read another one of his book.

QUESTION 2:What other character(s) beside the main character is really important to the story? How and why?

RESPONSE 2: I would say that Desmond McCain is the most important character besides Alex Rider because he is the bad guy and every one of the book there has to always be a madman. He is incredibly and he kills anyone who gets in his way of taking over the world. He covers up any of the dirt that people can find about him so he seems like a great person who would never think of having a plan that would kill millions of people. McCain meets all of those standards. He gives money to charity and has fundraisers. His blankets himself with an entirely different person so people wont suspect he could be doing any thing wrong.
He needs to be in the story because Alex Rider has to find a way to stop him. He needs to save the world from this evil genius. If wasn't so powerful and smart then Alex wouldn't have any challenge in taking him down. This man is important because he put Alex in deadly situations that any normal person would wouldn't be able to think of. For example, he leaves Alex dangling over vicious crocodiles and when you think there could be no possibility of survival an agent saves him at the last second. That is why this character is so important to the story.

In Class Writing Response

Hello. My name is Alex Rider and I am 14 years old. Right now I am in a bit of a situation. I am in a camp being held as a prisoner in Kenya. The mad man behind my capture this time is Desmoned McCain. I knew that there was something bad about him. All I am feeling is hate and regret. I am so mad that M-I6 used me again. They told me when I needed to sneak into the Green Field plant center that it would be safe but of course I was shot at and almost killed. Now the enemy has tracked me and trapped me here with no where to go. I wish I could start this over and not have worked for M-I6. I wish I could be at school having a normal life. Every other 14 year old boy wouldn't be fighting crime and running away from guards with machine guns.

I have to get out.

It is extremely hot inside this tent. I am being contained by two gaurds with machine guns. I wont be able to escape. My idea is to wait for them to take me out and that will be when I make a run for it. We will go into a facility that doesn't alow ammunition. I heard them speaking a couple hours ago. They are takeing me to Desmond Mecain so he can tell me his plan. Then he is going to kill me. Once I am inside the building it willl be easier for me to escape without having to worry about machine guns. My only defualt is that the guards will be more alert now that they dont have guns. I shoudn't have to be thinking about this when I am 14. Hopefully I will be alive to write another entery.

What has surprised you in the book? Why?
The part that has definitely surprised me the most was the crocodiles chapter. Alex is dangled over a river of crocodiles. If he lets go of the the rope he would fall into the pit of crocodiles. This is the way of the evil Desmond McCain torturing him to get information. This surprised me so much because it is such an insane way to torture a human being.
It also surprised me when he was crawling through an air duct trying to escape a fire. I would not have been able to think that fast. If i was in Alex situation I would have died right away. He ends up crawling out the other side of the building before it blew up. That is so surprising that he ends up escaping once again.
Which character would you like to be like? In what way? Why?
I would like to be the the character, Alex Rider because he is a spy and he is only 14. I am 14 and I haven't done anything close to what he has accomplished. At such a young age he knows how to knock out trained professional gourds. So far in the book he has already knocked out four people! He only does it with karate kicks and punches. In all 7 of the other books Alex is a spy working for M-I6 which is the London secret service. He is so useful to them because villains don't expect a 14 year old boy to be a spy. In all of his earlier missions he has been successful in saving the world and getting to be the hero. But after every mission M-I6 doesn't give him any credit or reward, just a brief thank you.
Most of the time I would want to be like Alex Rider because I would know how to fight and I could travel around the world. In some ways I wouldn't want to be him because in every one of his missions he is nearly killed at least twice. That part wouldn't be as appealing.

Independent Reading Choices

I would want to read the book Crocodile Tears, by Anthony Horowitz. This is the 8th book in the Alex Rider series. I have read every other book in the series and I loved it. I love them for the suspense because it is impossible to put it down. Each book gets better and better and this seems like the bast one yet. It is my favorite series about a teenage spy and I really want to read it.

Ralph is very smart to hide in the thicket behind the rock that killed Piggy. I just feel so upset that Ralph is forced to to run for his life from those stupid savages. They eventually found him but it was a smart place to hide. He shouldn't have told sam n eric though because they ratted him out. I thought it was nice though that Sam n Eric gave him a piece of meat before they hunted him. I don't think that Sam n Eric had a choice when they went to Jacks Tribe. I would have done the same thing if I was there.
I got so scared when I saw that Roger had sharpened a stick at both ends so that he could put Ralphs head on the stick as "Lord Of the Ralph" after they kill him. There was so much anger in Jack when he thought of burning Jack out of his hiding place. It was such a cruel way to a handle things. . I saw Jack chase Ralph all the way to the beach and that's when the Naval Officer found him. Ralph was lucky that he was so fast and he wasn't caught before he saw the Naval Officer. I was so surprised when Percival couldn't even remember his name. I remember when he could even recite his own address. I believe that this shows he got transformed into a savage. I liked when the Ralph told the naval officer that he was the leader. He really showed jack that he was the good and only leader. I think that the Naval Officer was upset because he saw that that the island was burning down and that everyone had their face painted.

Chapter 11

"Rescue?"

1. Piggy tells Ralph to blow the conch and to call an assembly.

2. Piggy's excuse is that he has the same rights as Jack and he deserves to see. He needs the glasses for the fire. He will get his glasses back because he has the conch. It is the right thing to do.

3. Ralph declares that they will dress neatly and they will tie their hair back.

4. Roger is the first one to challenge Ralph at castle rock.

5. Jack had been hunting and killing a pig before he confronted Ralph.

6. Ralph calls Jack a thief which gets Jack mad enough to stab him with his spear.

7. After Jack fights with Ralph he orders his hunters to tie up samneric. Everyone hesitated at first but they went on and tied them up anyway.

8. Roger is throwing rock at Piggy purposely missing just to intimidate him. He did the same to the littleuns in the beginning.

9. I strongly believe that Roger is the victim Piggy's death because he pushed on the lever which made the rock fall on Piggy's head. You could could also say it was evil for making Jack the way he is. Roger followed Jack and now he is the same. I am positive that the rock fell on purpose because when piggy started to talk about how Jack and his tribe were savages Roger didn't like it and so he pushed the rock over. He was also already throwing stones at Piggy but intentionally missing. You could tell Roger was eager to hurt someone because he kept throwing stones at piggy. The giant rock he sent down maybe wasn't intended to hurt any one, just to scare Piggy. There is no doubt that he didn't do it on purpose. So this states that Roger is clearly the one that killed him and it is another way that William Golding is showing the evil inside everyone.

Perspective: Simon's Ghost

Dear Diary,

I was really offended when I heard Ralph and Piggy's conversation about my death. Piggy was acting like I didn't exist and it was just an accident. I think that they are just to embarrassed and shocked to admit that they killed me. I guess it was my fault in some way because I appeared out of the jungle when the boys were in their dangerous circle. The lord of the flies told me that they would kill me and it was right. I should have listened.
I have watched Jack lead his tribe and I have a bad feeling about his group. They are the reason that I died and they became savages. I feel bad for Wilfred because I feel like he is going to have the same outcome as I did. I have seen Jack think capturing Ralph and Piggy and tying them up to a post. That group of boys is definitely the evil on the island.
Jack has a plan with Roger and Maurice to steal Piggy's glasses and to steal Ralph's fire. They plan to raid them at night and steal their fire because they want to be rescued or they just want Ralph and Piggy to join them. They did raid their there camp and I painfully watched Ralph and Piggy get punched and bitten. They stole Piggy's glasses and the fire. The two necessities to getting rescued. This island is headed for the worst.

2. He decides to walk up to the top of the mountain.

3. Simon moves the dead bodies parachutes and he finds the dead aviator.

4. Jack tells Ralph and Piggy to come to the feast/party.

5. Jack treats Ralph and Piggy with great respect because he wants them to join his group of hunter.

6. When Ralph says he can't speak with out the conch Jack tells him that isn't a rule on his side of the island.

7. It started to rain really hard and there was a lot of lighting.

8. Kill the beast, cut it's throat, spill the blood!

9. Simon comes out of the jungle and the rest of the beast think that he is the beast.

10. I think that the evil is defiantly responsible for Simon's death. Evil turned all of the kids into monsters that attack anything they feast there eyes on. Evil made Jack spread the disease to everyone else. Evil started with the painted faces which changed the boys from humans to savages. The evil inside them controlled them to kill Simon. The evil also created the circle of dance which was a circle of death. These things explain why that evil is the victim because every thing that I stated ended up being terrible in the end. The circle of dance ended up killing Simon. the face painting ended up staring the circle and made the boys become savages. Even the good pure boys like Ralph and Piggy helped kill Simon because there was evil inside of him.

After reading this far in the book evil is my first choice on the thing that killed Simon and poisoned every boys brain with evil. I felt like William Golding was trying to make the reader understand that this is what happens to humans when living on a uninhabited island. There is always evil inside of everyone.
